Variety recovery

Trobat, the ancestral grape variety of Costers del Segre

The grape variety Vitis vinifera TROBAT is considered an ancestral variety cultivated in the territory of the DO Costers del Segre and is currently undergoing a recovery process.

The project will study the behavior of TROBAT from both agronomic and oenological perspectives with the aim of generating new market opportunities with high added value for the sector. The study of the variety will also provide enough information, in case in the future, it is desired to include it in the list of authorized varieties within the Regulations of the DO.

El Trobat is an old variety of black grape very characteristic of the counties of Ponent. It is used for vinification and results in red, light and particularly flavorful wines. Currently, its cultivation is in sharp decline and only survives in some vineyards dedicated to self-consumption.

The objectives of the project are:

  • Introduction of new products in the market: single-variety organic wines found, Vitis vinifera variety widely cultivated historically throughout the territory of the DO and currently in danger of extinction.
  • Genetic enrichment of the productive potential of the DO, with a better typification of a variety linked to the territory, that allows to give to the final consumer a more accurate idea of the diverse “terroirs” of the DO
  • Enrichment of the tools available to the sector, wineries and viticulturists, to obtain products with greater added value.

The aim of the technical monitoring is the agronomic and oenological evaluation of a variety that has historically been present in the territory of the DO costers del Segre and that is currently in danger of extinction in this same territory.

Tomàs Cusiné, as president of the Costers del Segre Designation of Origin, presented the first fruits of this historical variety recovery project. A proposal coordinated together with the AEI Innovi Association, as a technological center, and also with the participation of INCAVI.
